The first Scottish LongLunch of 2014 will see us welcome Swiss-born Berlin based designer, editor and educator Nicolas Bourquin of Onlab. Onlab was originally established by Bourquin in Zürich in 2001, relocating to Berlin in 2002 after winning an international competition to produce the visual identity and supporting material for the Museuminsel (in partnership with Berlin studio Polyform). The move to Berlin was also the catalyst for Onlab receiving notable commissions from the likes of design and architecture publisher Gestalten, for whom Bourquin designed and co-edited several titles: Los Logos, Dos Logos and Tres Logos and Data Flow 1 + 2.
Onlab has since gone on to produce a portfolio of outstanding self initiated and client projects in areas including identity design, exhibition design, publishing and editorial design. John L Walters, editor of Eye magazine, wrote of the studio: ‘Onlab… with rarely more than six employees and interns, has the range, depth and vision you might expect from a larger, more established practice.’ (Eye 74). A profile in The Wall Street Journal — published shortly after their much revered redesign of architecture magazine Domus — described Onlab as: ‘…not an ordinary design studio… it operates around a single philosophy: that design is a narrative that can change how people approach the world.’
